April and May Highlights
April and May are great months to view some of San Diego's most spectacular spring flowers in bloom - tour the acres of vibrant and colorful ranunculus on a hillside overlooking the ocean at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad or visit The Lavender Fields organic farm in Valley Center where you can wander through the lavender labyrinth and tour the fields and essential oil distillery. The Anza-Borrego Desert is also famous for its stunning array of spring wildflowers and cacti and lucky visitors may just catch a glimpse of the area's roadrunners, golden eagles or bighorn sheep.
If you're looking for something to entertain the kids, check out the brand new Land of Adventure experience at Legoland, which transports visitors into 1920s Egypt and features four new rides. Or catch the Shamu Rocks concert and fireworks display during SeaWorld's Spring into Night.
For a truly unique experience, travel back to the 16th century at the Escondido Renaissance Faire in April where the whole family will enjoy Shakespeare plays, costumed performers, music, food and more. Or visit a pre-1840 North American fur trade encampment in May at the Manzanita High Mountain Rendezvous in Santa Ysabel - see history come alive with tipis, archery, tomahawk throwing and demonstrations of primitive skills.
Give yourself a special treat this Memorial Day weekend on one of Hornblower's specialty cruises through San Diego bay - try a patriotic Harbor cruise, Sea Lion Adventure, Champagne Brunch or Sunset Dinner cruise with fireworks.
