Below are a few year-end highlights of the Bureau's achievements: Total economic impact to the San Diego North region was $31 million, based on a 2004 Inquiry Conversion Study with individual inquiries and group sales revenues. Sales - Generated $6.9 million in total visitor spending among group business.
- Facilitated 37 site tours, highlighting 72 members. - Conducted two educational tours for 11 meeting planners from corporate, incentive, association and government segments highlighting 20 members. - Facilitated room blocks, activities, promotions and general information for multi-hotel bookings, including United Church of God, Escondido; Accenture Match Championship, Carlsbad; Good Guys Rod and Custom Association, Del Mar; In-Motion Carlsbad Marathon; Elite Racing Carlsbad 5,000 and San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon. Marketing - Generated more than 160,000 visitor inquiries through walk-in, phone-in, write-in and Web site, an increase of 17 percent over last fiscal year.
- Developed an exclusive San Diego North web page with SignOnSanDiego.com to promote the region and drive traffic to the Bureau Web site. - Secured editorial valued at over $726,000 in print and broadcast media, including XETV Fox 6 News, San Diego Union-Tribune, North County Times, Today's Local news, Arizona Republic, Sunset Magazine, O C Metro Magazine, American Way, Good Housekeeping, Where to Retire, Smart Meetings and The Magazine of Santa Clarita. - Produced the four-color 2005 San Diego North Travel Planning & Conference Guide, with a circulation of 40K. The Guide is distributed to visitor inquiries, meeting planners, tour operators, travel agents and the media. - Coordinated a segment of Good Morning Arizona. The segment featured weather reports from LEGOLAND California. Also featured were Birch Aquarium, the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, California Surf Museum and Oceanside Pier. Residents and visitors to the San Diego North region have the opportunity to save up to 50% off same-day and future arts performances and eliminate the extra trip to Downtown San Diego for discount theatre tickets. Tickets are available for both individual and group sales at the San Diego North CVB's Visitor Information Center, located in the California Center of the Arts, Escondido. Bureau Redeploys Sales Department Following Systems Review The San Diego North CVB Sales Department has redefined and reassigned its market segments to strengthen its efforts as a whole. In addition to focusing on key segments, the team will place emphasis on Southern California and the Western Region. The redeployment of the sales force is the result of several months of analysis and review of its sales system by an outside consulting firm. While the overall market segments remains unchanged, the sales team has reassigned each member the following segments and regions as listed below:
Roughly 650 meeting planners were in attendance at the Affordable Meetings West Trade Show
which took place on June 15 & 16, 2005 in San Jose, CA. Over 140 planners stopped by the two booths staffed by Stephanie Colby-Aburto, director of sales for San Diego North CVB, and co-op partners from L'Auberge Del Mar, Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad, Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, Hilton San Diego/Del Mar, Inns of America, and Morgan Run Resort and Club. To help convey the idea of "relaxation" within our region, a massage therapist offered rejuvenating massages to attendees who stopped by the booth.
The show generated 22 immediate leads and 48 future leads for the San Diego North region.Bureau conducts Los Angeles/Orange County Sales Calls Michelle Carlen, sales manager for San Diego North CVB made sales calls to key contacts with Walt Disney and receptive tour operators. The sales calls took place throughout Los Angeles and Orange County on July 12-13, 2005. In addition to meetings with the Walt Disney Travel Company, Carlen met with Americantours International, Allied TPro and New World Travel to promote the region and discuss opportunities in bringing tours to the area. The eNewsletter, Getaway Highlights, is distributed strictly to opt-in subscribers on a quarterly basis. It features updates on area events, the latest specials for accommodations and attraction tickets, as well as links to the San Diego North web site and ARES online booking engine. The cost to participate is $150 per month. The Bureau averages 2,400 pieces per month, translating to approximately .06 per piece - significantly less than individual postage. Robert Rauch, General Manager/Partner of the Homewood Suites San Diego/Del Mar, was named President of the San Diego County Hotel-Motel Association (SDHMA) for 2005/2006. The 2005 San Diego County Fair became the second largest Fair in history with 1,214,902 visitors attending the "Cinema Summer" themed Fair. Member Spotlight LEGOLAND California recently launched its newest attraction, Wild Woods Golf. In conjunction with the La Jolla Club Golf Company, the 23,000-square-foot attraction includes more than 40 LEGO forest creatures along the 18-hole interactive miniature golf course. The San Diego Zoo opened its newest animal habitat, Monkey Trails and Forest Tales. The new exhibit takes guests into the depths of a monkey-filled forest in a three-dimensional adventure from the forest floor to the jungle canopy. Rancho Valencia began construction on its new 10,000 square-foot spa. The ceremony, which took place at San Diego City Hall on Mon., Aug. 8, just prior to the council meeting, included a tribute to Mattson for her 20 years of service. This figure is up 3 percent from 2004. Furthermore, 23% of them will charge the vacations to their credit cards, up by 4 percentage points from last year, while 60% will be paying for their vacations from their savings or checking accounts, and 10% will be paying with cash. -Choosing a destination prevails over costs for leisure travelers when planning their trip, according to the results from a 2005 study in the National Leisure Travel Monitor. The study revealed that just over half of leisure travels (51%) decide where they want to go before determining how much they want to spend. Vacationers Remain Online While On Vacation According to a recent Travelocity survey of leisure travelers, +88% of travelers use cell phones, laptops and PDAs while on vacation. The study shows that one in three people find it more stressful to not be plugged in. Additionally, more than half of travelers between ages 22 to 45 admit to sneaking away from family and friends to check and respond to emails, voicemails and instant messages. Hot Trend - All Girl Getaways As more and more female bonding trips are being booked, all-girl getaways are one of the hottest trends, according to Liberty Travel.
