Southern California's uniquely rich and diverse heritage comes alive in San Diego North's Spanish missions and adobes, working blacksmith shops, a 19th century gold mine and on a historic battlefield. The legacy of early California is preserved throughout San Diego North at various sites, including the Rancho Guajome Adobe and Rancho Buena Vista Adobe , which were the center of social and cultural development as well as agricultural business in the mid-1800s, and at Mission San Luis Rey, the largest of the California missions and a remnant of the everyday life of the padres and Indians who inhabited the Mission more than a century ago in Oceanside. Other highlights include the Mission San Antonio de Pala, the last of the missions still serving the Native Americans and the Santa Ysabel Mission, which contains a museum, murals and an Indian burial ground. Escondido's History Center at Grape Day Park depicts life in the early 1900s through exhibits, live demonstrations and special events.
